> kasbah mediterranean restaurant in rhodes, greece
kasbah,
rhodes: mediterranean and exotic cooking
coriander, orange blossom water and almonds. thick,
medieval walls, exotic atmospheres, a magic mix of eastern and mediterranean
influences, heavy handmade dishes and shiny tableware. tasty and original
food, served in an unforgettable ambience. right in the heart of the old
town of rhodes - greece - we found this little and special restaurant.
already the experience
of getting lost in the old town in rhodes is one of the most romantic
experiences you can imagine. old small streets, small shops, unluckily
many tourists
not always of the most beautiful sort. oh well
it is not time to complain, once more, about the intrusive and often unpleasant
presence of these barbaric hordes. it is easy to avoid them. just walk
into the right places. places so special and sophisticated that have the
power to scare them away and relegate them to the less intimidating 'fish
and chips' fast foods they seem to enjoy so much.
kasbah is seems
to have the power to attract only the right kind of people. dim lights,
suggestive choice of music, elegant and warm atmosphere, and of course
great food. the owner, andreas, will likely be the one to welcome you
as soon as you enter the restaurant. you cannot make a mistake, you cannot
avoid to notice his strong french accent. the restaurant is not very big,
about 12 tables, and this is one of the many things that make it so special.
you can easily find a private corner where you can enjoy the food, the
atmosphere and some extra privacy.
the food. magic.
magic names for extremely original recipes. during our last visit i personally
enjoyed a chicken filet tajine, marinated with prunes, dates and apricots.
delicious. if you are more into seafood, try the shrimps marinated in
garlic butter with ouzo. and if you are vegetarian, just ask for vegetarian
couscous (all the couscous are served with semolina, vegetables in sauce
and spicy sauce).
we always enjoy
to read the whole menu, even if we already know what we want. it is always
nice and interesting to read the presentation and the names of the dishes
you can find at kasbah: an intriguing mix of dishes from the area around
the mediterranean sea - italy, spain greece (of course!), turkey - but
also from north africa and the middle east. simple and centuries-old recipes,
prepared one by one in a light and sophisticated way.
as a starter
you can find all kinds of bread: among others 'kasbah bread' with sesame,
garlic butter, home mad spicy sauce and grated cheese, 'italian bread'
with sesame, garlic butter, fresh mozzarella and prosciutto, but also
'zucchini cake' with feta cheese and mushrooms, shrimps marinated in garlic
butter with ouzo or trout mousse and toast. we also like very much the
fresh prepared hummus: mashed chick peas with sesame cream.
the salads are
fresh, tasty and - again - very original. enjoy the turkish salad 'chopan'
with fresh lemon juice and orange blossom water. or the 'haidiri' salade,
a carrot salad with yoghurt, dill and garlic. the real kasbah speciality
is couscous: couscous with marinated chicken, with spicy meatballs, with
exotic spices and fresh coriander.
the dessert is a delightful explosion of sweet and sophisticated tastes:
homemade almond mousse with - you choose - cinnamon, caramel, chocolate
or fresh fruit. the chocolate cake is enriched with ground almonds. the
crème caramel with sweet wine and honey melts on your tongue and
the 'moroccan orange' is a fresh and light dessert with slices of fresh
orange, cinnamon, fresh mint, dates and almonds.
kasbah is a magic place indeed, well hidden from the many tourists who
visit the old town of rhodes every day. a place for gourmands and all
true romantics at heart. this is absolutely a place you will not want
to miss if you happen to visit that beautiful greek island that is rhodes.
