Bangkok
nightlife: hu'u bangkok hu'u in bangkok is one of those places
you can easily become addicted to. lounge bar, restaurant, hu'u (pronounced
who) is the place where the 'beautiful people' in bangkok like to be,
and to be seen. we visited hu'u on a friday night, and as expected the
atmosphere was very 'sparkling'.
in the pre-lounge club you will find a lot of space, thai style couches
and small tables (about 120 seats). the upper floor is entirely dedicated
to the restaurant, 70 dining seats, and a wall of glass that protects
the restaurant's guests from the music coming from downstairs but allows
them to enjoy a great view on the lounge bar (and on the people).
talking about
the restaurant. thomas smith (hotel de la point in brittany, les saveurs
in toulouse and the savoy in london) is the executive chef of hu'u, assisted
by singaporean executive sous chef alvin tan (previously the raffles and
club chinois of singapore) and thai executive sous chef virot ponnadee
(previously the savoy in london and luca's in bangkok.). the menu is a
mix of world dishes, reflecting the cosmopolitan public of the restaurant.
being thai couisine one of the best in the world, you can of course enjoy
also the most traditional thai specialties. the kitchen is 'open', so
from the lounge bar you can admire the chefs at work, protected by a huge
glass window. and they work a lot, believe us.
the design of
hu'u is probably the first thing that will hit you once you enter the
club. dark colors, comfortable couches, dim lights, a very high ceiling
(approx 10ft high), a very trendy wall-refrigerator where the most precious
wines are carefully kept.
colin seah, a top singaporean talent, is responsible for the design
of the club and restaurant. director of m.o.d - ministry of design, colin
is currently working on bin tong park residence, and the highly anticipated
majestic hotel, singapore, due to open in december 2005. previous works
included klang lane residence, singapore, and the blueprint concept store.
why we liked
hu'u in bangkok. because it is a perfect balance of high class cuisine,
sophisticated atmosphere, trendy music selection (eclectic and inspired
sets ranging from down tempo, lounge and acid jazz to jazzy, latin and
occasional old skool filtered house) and of course nice people to hang
around.
at hu'u you will find a great mix of local and foreign visitors, periodical
parties (the club has a standing capacity of about 500 people) and - if
you are lucky, the bangkok fashion people (it appears to be one of those
few places they like to hang around
).
if you are in bangkok, or are planning a trip to bangkok, this absolutely
is a 'must visit place'.
