John Varvatos: his new music label, his Summer 2015 collection. And more.
Milan. First day of the Men's Fashion Week Summer 2015. The Milan Men's Fashion Week would not be the same, not for me at least, without the John Varvatos show. I love rock, and I like people who love rock. Like John Varvatos.

Milan. First day of the Men's Fashion Week Summer 2015. The Milan Men's Fashion Week would not be the same, not for me at least, without the John Varvatos show. I love rock, and I like people who love rock. Like John Varvatos. His style in fashion, but also his personal style, his creations, his personal choices and new entrepreneurial 'initiatives', all talk about his love for rock. A lifestyle more than just a style. As usual we met John backstage just a few minutes before the beginning of the show. Relaxed, and maybe a little tired of journalists asking always the same questions. So, why not talk about something else, and not just about his latest collection? (you will read and see more about it here on ADVERSUS in the coming weeks). And we did it.
Let's not talk about fashion, for now, and let's instead talk about John Varvatos, rock music, and a very important new music label on the market: "John Varvatos Records"...
I started a label a few months ago, John Varvatos Records, and I am in the middle of confirming some artists to being the first artists in the label both up and coming artists and some major names as well, so over the next few months we'll be announcing the first signings, and what we really want to do is make it all about the music, not just about pop music that is up primarily in the market nowadays but we want to be quite democratic about the artists you know we really want to work with the artists to develop them and not always worry about where the single is where the next hit is which isn't really working on great music, so I am excited about it, it is something very near and dear to my heart, and a lot of artists are coming to us, and talk to us about it, because they do not love the record industry the way it is today, they are looking for something different, somebody who really cares about them and the music.
You love rock, this is nothing new, but I always wanted to ask you... do you also play some instruments?
Not well (laughing). I play guitar, I play drums, but I am not good. I love to play, but I am not good. I am not professional
A few years ago, I asked you, why do you show your collections in Milan? You told me: because Milan is the most important place in the world to show a collection. Now I ask you the same question again. Is Milan still the number one place to show a collection or have things changed?
Yes, at the moment Milan still remains the most important fashion city for the runaway, for introducing you it is. The most powerful brands showing at the same time... I think London fashion week is becoming interesting right now as well but I find Milan is the center of the universe for men's fashion. Paris is great much smaller for men than Milan, London is interesting, and New York behind them all, really. New York is interesting as well for up and coming young designers, but not on a high level.
Let's talk about this collection. You will show your Summer 2015 collection in a few minutes, we hear Queen music in the background on the other side of the wall, where the catwalk is...
Queen in the background... I was listening to the Queen album "a night at the opera" and thinking about our last few shows which have been much more elegant and more formal for us, and I thought that even KISS, they were in suits, shirt and ties, and I thought that it would be interesting to look at the opera, look at formalwear, cutaway jackets, tails, all the interesting great formal details and take them to today wear. Interesting fabrics, prints, textured fabrics that took that kind of evening romanticism and brought it to the day.
