homepage > beauty > hair trends summer 2007: less is more
The new trends for the upcoming season? A big come-back of curls, both for him and for her. Blond will be the colour of Summer. But the main trend will be the individual search for simpler, less showy haircuts and hairdos. "Too much" is last season. Less is more. As usual, we are in the habit of meeting Sergio Carlucci, managing director of Toni & Guy Italia, to find out the trends for hairstyles for the upcoming season. So we did also for the Spring/ Summer 2007. The keyword is 'volume'. 'This year we see a huge comeback of curly hairs both for men and women', says Sergio Carlucci. 'Therefore, the focus will be on volume. Moreover, we can expect inspiration to come from the movies, from Hollywood, with the difference that ultimately hairdos will be simpler, more wearable, than those sported by the divas across the ocean. All in all, we can say that the trend is the comeback of volumes.' Colors blend in... We all know by now that colour and cut should be complementary and that, to achieve the desired goal, they must be in perfect harmony. This is true also for the upcoming season. 'A lot of attention will be given to the hair colours, that will be softer, especially for women' explains Sergio Carlucci. 'We will see colour free of large streaks, strong contrasts, but in which different nuances, always soft, blend together. It is the characteristic of the upcoming season's colour; a technique whose name is self-explanatory: 'colourfusion' (fusion of colours).'
'We are noticing a cultural and social change in people- especially in younger generations- that results in a search for a simpler look. There is a trend towards everything that is less flaunted, less vulgar, but also less strong than the one we saw in the last few years. Young generations follow more and more their own taste, leading towards a more individual sense of fashion, also for what concerns hair. 'Expressionism' means thus an individual search for one's personal and intellectual growth, and one's look, without going back to mass trends or even the more vulgar expressions of the past years when the results narrowed the punk, or neo-punk and so on. In short, we are approaching a fashion for hair a lot simpler.'
Enough with the excesses. Let's go back to curls. 'This trend for curls entails also perms? Even if your target is a simpler look?' we ask Sergio Carlucci, to get an even clearer picture. 'The trend towards simpler hairstyles, does not exclude perms which, in this view, it is a mean to achieve the look, to achieve more volume'. To better explain the idea, Carlucci makes a comparison with the 1980s. 'back then, perm was used to achieve abnormal volumes, exasperated showy styles. Now it is all more relaxed.'
A return to simplicity, but what does that mean in reality? Simplicity, volume. 'In which kind of hairstyles do we see this trends?' we ask Sergio Carlucci. 'If you are asking me how exactly they will be, I could not answer. But I can tell you that our scouts indicate that the public is looking for something less showy, styles that do not catch attention, that go more unnoticed than before. This is a trend that will become stronger as the year progresses.' For what concerns colours, Sergio Carlucci can be more explicit. 'This Summer's colour is blond. Babyblond, all the nuances of blond.' And here he highlights: 'Be careful, because colour is even more personalised than cut and styling, because it has to match your skin tone, that changes everything. Therefore, I cannot tell you what colour is fashionable. Each person has its own colour, I would say. Because hairstyles, colour included, are always a very personal and personalised!'
