How to create the "Roaring Twenties" make-up

Interview with James Molloy, Director of Artistry for Asia and Pacific at M.A.C Cosmetics Backstage at the Fur Fur Fashion Show F/W 2012 2013 in Tokyo

Backstage at the Fur Fur show in Tokyo we interviewed James Molloy, Director of Artistry M.A.C Asia and Pacific, and of course we talked about the make-up he created for the Fur Fur Fashion Show winter 2012 2013. This make-up look is inspired by the "Roaring Twenties" as you can clearly see from the images. Molloy explained us - step by step - how to re-create this look.

The inspiration
'The inspiration for this make-up look', James Molloy told us, 'is about the Twenties. And I was really inspired by the palette of the Fur Fur fashion collection which shows very pale, pink, delicate and soft tones. I wanted the make-up to look innocent and almost a little bit melancholic, a little bit sad. So we painted these delicately gorgeous little faces with a rosy blush and a nude soft lip. It is all very feminine but with a super innocent feeling. The eyebrows are almost a little bit sad, so you get a gorgeous little character.'

How to…

The key products for this look are creamy and soft make-up products as creamy blushes and a creamy lipstick. 'I really wanted to create the make-up using fingers, because that gives it an organic feel', explains Molloy.

Step 1: Create the perfect base
Use a foundation that suits your skin. Apply the product using your fingers.

Step 2: Innocent rosy cheeks
Use your ring finger and pat on a creamy blush in a peachy tone right on the apple of the cheek (Bamboo M.A.C Pro Cream Colour Base) for natural peachy tone colour. Then make it pop a little bit with some pink cream blush just in the centre (Cremeblend Blush M.A.C. in a bright pink tone). So it is a mixture of something that is a little bit more peachy and something that is a little bit more rose.

Step 3: Sad eyebrows
'For everyday life the eyebrows as we did here may be a little sad' says Molloy. "You can just follow the natural shape of your eyebrows".

Step 4: Shadowy eyes
Keep the eyes very soft and mat and use 'shadowy' eye shadow with soft colors. Apply the eye shadow with a large brush (Molloy recommends 252, a M.A.C large shader brush) to make a very large shape on the eye. Start applying a soft brown eye shadow for base ('Shadowy' M.A.C Pro Sculpting Powder) and then make it a little bit more deep with a charcoal shadow eye shadow ('Concrete' Eyeshadow M.A.C). So you go from a soft brown to a grey brown shadow (see the photo gallery).

At the very end you add some shiny taupe color (Molloy used 'Dusk' M.A.C Cream Colour Base) to keep the idea of wetness and kind of youth on the eye. You just pop a little bit right on the center of the eyelid.

For a little more expression you can put some grey eyeliner under the eye. Finish it off with some grey eye shadow.

Step 5: Rose bud lips
For the lips you use a nude and creamy lipstick (Molloy used 'Creme D'Nude' M.A.C). It must look like a painted nude shade with a gorgeous little shine so that it makes the lips really pouty, peachy and feminine.

Step 6: Nude nailpolish
The finishing touch is nude, slightly beige nail polish for the nails.

That's it. Here our step by step guide to re-create a trendy and modern 'Roaring Twenties' look, with the help of James Molloy - Director of Artistry M.A.C Asia and Pacific
