It does not happen every day… sipping a glass of wine and leaning back in a comfortable chair, while enjoying a breathtaking panorama. Breathtaking is the right word, because we are on the 89th floor of the Jin Mao Tower, the tallest building in Shanghai, and the panorama we are talking about is - you've already understood it - the modern metropolis of Shanghai. 'Cloud 9' is the name of the highest bar in the world. We chose this lounge as the start of a sultry August evening in Shanghai. You take a taxi, pointing to the skyscraper (you can just tell the taxi driver "please, go there…") to make clear where you want to go, and literally dive into this wonderful lounge bar, horizontally, through the wide streets of Shanghai, and then vertically into the air.

To reach the bar located at the top of the tower you have to take no less than three (!) lifts. From the ground floor you go up to the 54th floor where is located the lobby of the Grand Hyatt Hotel (the hotel occupies twenty floors starting from the 54th floor). Then you take another lift and go to the 80th floor (or it could be the 79th or 81th… - sometimes my memory is far from perfect… golden fish memory they call it… ;) ) until you finally reach the 89th floor.

When you step out from the elevator, a lovely and elegant hostess will walk you through the narrow passages and many tables and will guide you to the table reserved for you (reservation is important here…). The walls are black, the floor is black, the windows run from floor to ceiling, allowing panoramic views of the beautiful, hypnotic panorama. In the beginning it's just hard to understand where you are going, but the hostess will help you.

Refined music, an environment which reminds me of a movie, a menu with excellent wines but to my surprise also pretty fair prices. And a view of that city which, as we said, will take your breath away. Shanghai is the city of 'thousands of skyscrapers', yet it seems - from our point of observation at "Cloud 9" - as if the buildings we see far below us are just small houses...

Meanwhile, our glasses of wine are served and we can totally surrender to the panorama that continues to fascinate us. 'Cloud 9' is an unforgettable experience, a must for those visiting Shanghai. If only to get an idea of the greatness of this metropolis. And of its beauty.
